LGBTQ+ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer.
The “+” is often used to indicate that there are many more identities included in the LGBTQ+ community.
Part of being supportive is knowing just what to say.

Why a Glossary?
With more LGBTQ+ visibility worldwide, more LGBTQ+ people feel safe to live openly than ever before. As the LGBTQ+ community grows and becomes more visible, so does the language used to describe LGBTQ+ identities, experiences, and communities.
For many parents of LGBTQ+ youth, LGBTQ+ terminology is a barrier to communication with their kids. We have created this glossary to serve as a resource for anyone curious about new or unfamiliar terms or definitions.
This glossary also includes outdated and offensive language. As important as it is to know what to say, it is also important to know what not to say!
LGBTQ+ culture is not a monolith and is far more expansive and various than language can currently capture. Human expressions of sexuality and gender are infinite! As LGBTQ+ people become more visible and open, language has evolved to capture these experiences. It is possible (and likely!) that this terminology list will continue to grow.

You don’t need to be an expert in all things LGBTQ to let them know you care. “There’s no right or wrong way to express love,” reminds Dr. Sanders. “Just be present and be open.” Even if you’re not sure what to say, something as simple as, “I’m here for you. I love you, and I will support you no matter what” can mean the world to your child.
*Disclaimer: terms in the glossary may be used in different ways by different people. When it comes to identity descriptors, it is always best to trust the definition of the person who uses them. The best practice is simply to ask a person how they identify, listen to, respect, and mirror the language they use to describe themselves.
